My old foreman saw my cordless nailer and asked where my hammer went

Ran into my old foreman Dale at a lumber yard in Tacoma on Tuesday and he laughed when he saw my cordless framing nailer sitting in the truck bed. He said a kid on his crew last spring couldn't sink a 16 penny by hand when the battery died, so now he makes everyone swing a hammer for the first 3 weeks on his jobs. Do you all still keep hand skills sharp on new hires or is that just a Dale thing?

So did that kid just never pick up a hammer again or what? Sounds like Dale's making a rule out of one guy's bad day. I get wanting guys to have the basics but 3 weeks seems like a lot.
