My old boss swore by using a 4-inch roller for polyurethane, but I think he was wrong

He said it gave a smoother finish than a brush on flat surfaces. I tried it on a maple table top last week and got tons of tiny bubbles in the coat. Had to sand the whole thing back down and start over with a good foam brush. Now I'm wondering if he just had a special technique or if brushes are always better. What's your go-to method for applying water-based poly?

My uncle's a cabinetmaker and he always thins his poly with a little water first.

Watched a buddy try that on a walnut tabletop. The finish clouded up and never really set right. He ended up having to strip the whole thing and start over.

Ugh, that sounds like a total nightmare.
