Just realized the difference a sharp plane blade makes after 3 years
I've been using the same block plane on job sites for about 3 years now. Never really paid much attention to sharpening it, just kept honing it on some cheap stone when it felt dull. Last week I finally watched a guy at the lumber yard show me how to properly sharpen and polish a blade. Took me 20 minutes to get it right with some 1000 and 6000 grit stones. The first time I ran it across a piece of red oak it was like cutting through butter. I could feel the blade slicing instead of scraping. Made me wonder how many projects I've messed up over the years just because my tools weren't dialed in right. Has anyone else had a moment like that where you realized you were working harder than you had to?

Cutting through butter" is exactly right... I had the same thing happen with my chisels last year. Spent an afternoon getting them scary sharp and wondered why I'd been fighting wood for so long.
