I finally stopped fighting cedar and started pre-drilling everything

After 3 years of cursing split boards on a deck job near Spokane, I watched an old timer pre-drill every single piece and his waste went to zero, that was the day I gave in. Why would anyone still swing a nail into red cedar without pre-drilling when it costs you two extra minutes and saves a whole board re-cut, am I missing something or is this just stubbornness?
