I finally saw a deck collapse at a job in Austin last summer.
The homeowner had used drywall screws for the whole thing, and after a heavy rain the ledger just pulled right off the house. Now I always check the fasteners before I even start a quote. What's the dumbest thing you've seen a DIYer use on a structural job?

Zip ties on a porch railing post.

Weirdly specific, but I've seen that before. Usually means someone's trying to rig up a temporary fix or hang something cheap, like holiday lights or a plant. Never looks good for long though, the plastic gets brittle and snaps. What were they even trying to attach?
