Had a chat with an old framer that made me rethink my whole approach to layout
I was helping this guy Bill on a deck build outside Raleigh last Tuesday. He watched me square up the ledger board with a speed square and just laughed. He said I was wasting time measuring twice when I should just trust my string lines and cut once. At first I thought he was crazy, but after 3 hours of watching him work I saw he was right half the time. I still like being precise, but that convo hit different because he showed me how speed matters just as much on big jobs. Anyone else ever have a veteran call them out on something they thought they knew?

Honestly, Bill just wanted to save you from becoming a human protractor.

I used to think he was just being stubborn... but now I kind of see it his way. It's one of those things where you look back and realize someone was actually trying to help, not fight you. Definitely gave me a different take on the whole thing.
