Finally got the miters right on a crown molding job after 4 tries

Last week I was working on a living room in a old house over in Oak Park and the crown molding was giving me fits. The ceiling was out of level by almost half an inch on one side so my normal cuts were all off. I must have recut the same corner piece three times before I grabbed a scrap of 2x4 and built a little jig to hold the crown at the right spring angle. Once I did that, the fourth test fit was dead on. I used my DeWalt miter saw but honestly the jig did all the heavy lifting. The homeowner came in and just said "wow that looks seamless" which felt pretty good after all that swearing. Has anyone else had to build a custom jig for a tricky ceiling?

Every project's just a reminder that nothing's ever perfectly square in real life.

Tell me about it. You spend all that time measuring, checking, re-checking, and then the wall or the floor throws it all off anyway. It's like the universe has a personal grudge against 90 degree angles. At some point you just have to accept that "good enough" is the real goal and move on. Makes me feel a little better knowing I'm not the only one out here fighting with plumb lines and spirit levels every weekend.
