Customer argued with me about grain direction for 20 minutes
Last week in my shop near Columbus, a guy insisted his oak shelf would look fine with the grain running vertical instead of horizontal, even after I showed him two sample boards side by side. He got loud and said I was just trying to upsell him on more lumber, but the horizontal piece clearly showed less bowing under weight. How do you handle clients who think they know more than the wood itself?
Man, you did the right thing and he still made it your problem. That horizontal board bowed less because wood is strongest along the grain, not because of some sales trick. Some folks just have to learn the hard way when that shelf sags in a year.
