Oh man, that's rough. I swear some folks just don't get how much goes into making trim look clean and tight. They see the finished product and think it's just nailing some boards up, but they don't account for the measuring, the miter cuts, the coping, and making sure everything sits flat on wonky old walls. I bet when he tried it himself he found out real quick why the cheap stuff at the hardware store still leaves you with gaps and frustration. Hope he was at least humble enough to admit you were right.
