Warning: your $500 bootcamp capstone project is probably not what hiring managers even look at
I help screen resumes for a small data team in Columbus and I keep seeing the same mistake. People spend 3 months on a flashy capstone that uses 6 tools but no clear result, then list it first on their resume. Last month I looked at 40 entry level applicants and only 2 could explain what problem their project solved or what number got better. Your capstone is not the point, the story around it is, something like 'cut report time from 2 hours to 15 minutes for a fake store' beats 'built a dashboard with Python, SQL, and Tableau' every time. I know this because our last two hires both had simple projects with clear outcomes and no brand name tools at all. If you are in a bootcamp right now, ask yourself what a stranger learns about your work in 10 seconds from your project line. What did your capstone really change, and can you say it in one sentence?
