Practice portfolios finally clicked after I stopped comparing job descriptions
I spent 3 months applying to junior analyst roles and got nowhere. Every posting asked for different tools and I kept trying to learn all of them at once. Last month I picked 2 core skills, SQL and Excel, and built one portfolio project around a real dataset from my city's open data portal. I did a rent vs. income breakdown for Cleveland neighborhoods and wrote up my process like a case study. In interviews now I can talk through the numbers for 15 minutes without freezing. Comparing that focused approach to my old shotgun resume proves depth beats spread every time. Has anyone else found their sweet spot by narrowing down what they show? What worked for you?
