Why does nobody talk about hitting 500 job applications in 4 months

I hit 500 applications last week after being laid off from a tech company in Austin back in February. That number really shocked me because I thought I'd find something after maybe 100 or 150. Most of those were just quick apply buttons on LinkedIn and Indeed, maybe 50 of them had actual cover letters or custom resumes. Out of all that, I got maybe 15 interviews and only 2 real offers. The second offer came from a company I almost skipped applying to because the job title sounded boring. My advice is don't bother with the easy apply stuff, it's a total numbers game that wastes your time. Has anyone else tracked their actual application count and seen how low the response rate really is?

Well, that's just the way things work now, isn't it? You see this same pattern everywhere, not just in job hunting. People spend hours doing things the easiest way possible and then wonder why nothing comes of it. I've watched young folks at the grocery store scan ten items with their phones while holding up the line, all to save two minutes of standing there. The quick apply button is the same thing - it feels productive but really it's just busy work that gives you a false sense of progress. You learned the hard way what most people never figure out, that putting real effort into fewer things usually beats spraying your resume across the internet.

Pick a couple of job postings you really want and spend an hour tailoring each application... it's way better than sending out fifty generic ones and hearing nothing back.
