Vent: I almost lost a big job because I didn't know how to talk about my past work
I was applying for a project manager role in Denver and kept getting stuck when they asked about my old jobs. My friend told me to use the STAR method for every answer, which means Situation, Task, Action, Result. I practiced for 2 hours, and in the next interview I gave a full story about a fence project that went over budget and how I fixed it. They hired me the next week. Has anyone else found a specific interview trick that actually worked for them?

My buddy was terrible at interviews until he started writing down three good questions to ask them at the end. He said asking about team dynamics on the second round showed he was thinking long-term... got an offer for a tech support lead spot he really wanted.

Seems like that could come off as too rehearsed though.

The STAR method was a game changer for me too. I used it for a superintendent role and being able to lay out a clear story about handling a supply shortage in the middle of a project turned what felt like a weakness into a strength. Practicing it a few times really made the difference, once you have the structure down it feels natural to adapt it to different questions.
