Two managers told me opposite things about taking breaks, which one is right?
I've been at my job in Austin for about 8 months now. Last week I overheard my manager tell a new hire to never take a lunch break at your desk because it makes you look replaceable. Then today my old manager from my last job texted me and said she tells her team to eat at their desks to show they're grinding. Both are pretty senior people. One says stepping away shows you have boundaries and you work smarter. The other says the person who skips breaks gets picked for the good projects. I honestly don't know who to listen to. Has anyone else gotten completely opposite career advice from two bosses? How do you decide which one to follow?
The thing nobody's asking is what these two managers actually do all day. I've noticed the "eat at your desk" bosses are usually the ones whose jobs are mostly sitting in meetings, so they don't see the value in stepping away. The "take a real break" bosses tend to be the ones who actually make stuff. So which kind of person do you want to turn into? Follow the boss whose job you'd actually want in five years. That's a way better test than trying to guess which advice gets you picked for projects.
