Question about a really weird interview I had in Chicago last month

I went for a marketing job and the manager asked me to sell him a stapler on his desk, which was fine, but then he started stapling random papers together while I talked. He said it was a 'focus test' and offered me a role in a different department on the spot. Has anyone had an interview go totally off the rails like that?

What even is a focus test for a stapler? That sounds like he was just messing with you. I had an interviewer spend twenty minutes telling me about his boat, then asked if I liked fishing. Got a rejection email the same day. Some people just have no clue how to run a proper interview.

@karen_nelson40 Your boat story reminds me of a time I got interviewed by a guy who spent the whole time talking about his cat. Named the cat, showed me pictures, told me about the time it got stuck in a tree. I just sat there nodding along. Got a rejection email two days later saying they went with someone who had more "cultural fit." Real shame too, I actually wanted that job. Makes you wonder if some interviewers are just bored and want someone to talk to.

Maybe they're just lonely and want to talk?
