Paid $400 for a resume writer and it got me zero calls in 2 months

I got laid off from my logistics job in March and panicked, so I dropped $400 on a resume service that promised to get me past the screening software. Two months later I've sent out 60 applications and heard back from three, all rejections. My cousin looked at it and said it reads like a robot wrote it, which, turns out, one kind of did. I rewrote the whole thing myself in a weekend, cut it from two pages to one, and I already have a phone screen set up for Thursday. The worst part is the writer never even asked what job I was going after, just took my money and sent back a template. Did I just get unlucky or is paying for resume help basically a scam now?

The bigger issue here isn't that resume services are a scam, it's that the one you picked was. A good writer spends an hour on the phone with you asking about the jobs you want, the skills that matter for those roles, and what you actually did day to day. That intake call is the whole job. A $400 template with no questions asked isn't a resume service, it's a form letter with your name swapped in.
