My aunt who hires at a hospital convinced me to take the night shift for 2 years... my body still has not forgiven me
Everyone kept saying take the night differential for 2 years, stack the money, then switch to days once you have seniority. My aunt works in HR at a hospital in Toledo and she pushed me hard on it, so I did it. The extra $4.10 an hour sounded great on paper, around $340 more a month after taxes. By month 14 I was falling asleep at red lights on the drive home and my primary care doc pulled my labs twice because my A1C and thyroid numbers looked off. I moved to days 8 months ago and I still cannot sleep before 1am without a pill. So no, the money was not worth it, and I wish more people would say that out loud. Did anyone else take the shift pay and regret it, or did it actually work out for you?
The only thing worse than your story is that I did almost the same thing and somehow thought I was built different. I took a night gig for the shift bump and told myself I was a night person because I stayed up till 2am in college, which is like saying you can fly because you had a dream about it once. Six months in, I was eating gas station food at 4am and calling it dinner, and my sleep got so bad my own dog stopped waking me up because he gave up on me. The money did help pay off a card, I will give it that much, but nobody tells you the tax on your body keeps charging you after you switch back. Your aunt meant well, but HR people see the pay sheet, not the guy nodding off at a green light at 6am. The 1am thing is real too, your clock gets stuck and it takes forever to reset, mine took close to a year.
