I used to think networking was just handing out business cards at events. Then I spent a year actually helping people in my field without asking for anything back. The difference in my career after that was huge.

The news cycle makes everything seem huge.

Man, that's the real stuff right there. It's not about collecting contacts, it's about being a person people actually want to talk to. I started just sharing useful info when I saw someone stuck on a problem, zero expectation. Those folks remember you when something good pops up. @the_margaret might find it over the top, but it's just being decent, and it pays off way more than any elevator pitch. Forced networking feels gross, but building a real rep for being helpful? That sticks.
