I finally figured out why my resume kept getting passed over after 8 months of silence

Back in February I sent out like 40 applications for accounting roles around Columbus and got maybe 2 callbacks, both dead ends. I blamed the market, my experience, everything except the actual issue. Last week a recruiter friend took 5 minutes to look at my resume and pointed out I was using a two column layout with a skills sidebar. She said the ATS scanner was probably reading my work history as one long jumbled line. I switched to a single column format with simple headers and rewrote my bullet points to match the exact wording in job posts, not just my own descriptions. Within 3 days I had 2 interviews scheduled. Has anyone else had a recruiter or hiring manager point out a tiny formatting thing that was killing your chances? What was yours?
