Dropped $400 on a resume writer and it felt like a total scam
I was stuck in my job hunt for months, so I paid a 'pro' to redo my resume. Got back this fancy two-page thing full of buzzwords that didn't sound like me at all. I've sent it out for three weeks now and gotten ZERO calls back, which is worse than before. Has anyone actually had a GOOD experience with a service like this, or should I just cut my losses and do it myself?

That's a brutal waste of money (been there with a bad cover letter service). You'll probably do better just reworking your old one yourself.

Been there" is right, Stella. The real problem is those services use generic templates. I once saw one that used the exact same opening line for a banker and a barista. You're better off taking your old letter and just talking about a single, specific win from your last job in plain language.

My cousin paid 200 bucks for a service last year and got the same "dynamic results-oriented professional" line for a job at a daycare. It's wild. Lucas is totally right about picking one real win from your old job. I tried that after my own bad service experience and it just sounds like a human wrote it. Those templates can't tell your story at all.
