Am I the only one who thinks 'follow your passion' is bad career advice?

I was at a birthday party in Austin last weekend and some guy kept going on about how he quit his $75k job to 'follow his passion' for making artisan soap. He's now making like $28k and his wife is covering most of the bills. He looked miserable. My takeaway is that passion doesn't pay rent, skills do. Anyone else think this advice needs to die?
