A foreman in Akron asked me one question about my crew of two and it stuck with me for a year
Last spring I was bidding a mulch and bed job in Akron and the general contractor, a guy named Ray, walked the site with me for 20 minutes. When we got to the end he asked me how many guys I had, and I said two, and he just nodded and said "then bid like a two man crew, not like you're trying to look bigger than you are." I had been padding my quotes to seem like a real operation and losing jobs without knowing why. That one line made me stop overpromising and start quoting what my little crew could actually pull off in a week. Six months later I've landed 9 of the last 11 jobs I bid, and the work actually gets done on time. Curious if other small operators went through this too, like when did you stop trying to seem bigger than you are?
