Vent: I thought those $15 emergency blankets were just cheap foil junk.
Got caught in a surprise cold snap near Sedona last fall and my sleeping bag just wasn't cutting it, so I dug the blanket out of my first aid kit as a last resort. Wrapping it around my bag added a crazy amount of heat and actually got me through the night without shivering. Has anyone else been saved by a piece of gear they totally wrote off before?

You know what, I always thought those things were basically trash too. But I had the total opposite happen. Tried using one in a similar spot, and the wind just shredded it in minutes. Felt like I was wrestling with a giant potato chip bag. Maybe the brand matters, but mine was a total letdown. I switched to a heavier emergency bivy sack instead, way less fuss.

You've got a point about the wind. I used to think they were all the same until I saw one get torn apart. Might have to look into a heavier option like you did.
