Tried a cheap foam pad versus my old Therm-a-Rest last weekend

Went up to the White Mountains with both. The foam one was only $15 but I froze. The Therm-a-Rest kept me warm all night. The difference was the R-value, the foam one was basically zero. Anyone have a good budget pad that actually works?

Yeah @leo_murphy, learned that the hard way on a frozen lake.

Honestly, the ground itself steals way more heat than people realize. That cheap foam is basically just stopping rocks from poking you. I used a thin pad on a cold night once and it felt like the cold was just sucking the warmth right out of my back. You need that air gap the inflatable pad creates to actually block it. It's not just about the R-value number, it's about having a real barrier.
