TIL my tent stakes were basically useless from a guy at a state park
Last weekend at Hocking Hills State Park, this older camper next to me saw me struggling with my tent and just laughed. He said those cheap aluminum stakes that come with most tents might as well be toothpicks in rocky soil lol. He showed me his 8-inch steel shepherd's hook stakes and I felt like an idiot for not upgrading sooner. Anyone else run into that moment where a stranger's gear advice just clicked?

Did you end up buying a set of those steel stakes after that? I ask because I think a lot of people hear good advice but still don't follow through. It took me breaking three cheap stakes in one afternoon at a campground in western Ohio before I finally got smart. The funny thing is the guy who told me was using stakes that looked like they were from the 1970s. They were all bent up and rusty but he said they'd hold in concrete. My question is did you go out and buy the good ones the next day or did you wait until you snapped another toothpick?

That old timer probably saved you a ton of headaches. Broke three of those flimsy aluminum stakes on my first trip to Mohican State Park. Rocky ground and a cheap tent kit don't mix well. Finally grabbed a set of thick steel ones from a farm supply store. Now I bring extras for friends who still use the toothpick stakes. Never thought a simple piece of metal could make that much difference.
