Three nights with a busted zipper before I caved and fixed it

My tent fly zipper jammed on night one of a trip near Lake George. I fought it with pliers and candle wax for two nights. Stupid cold mornings, crawling out the other side. Took me 30 minutes at home with a new slider from the hardware store. Cost $4.50 and I waited a whole weekend being miserable. Why do I always avoid the simple fix so long? Anyone else carried duct tape like a badge of honor instead of just replacing the part?
