That rainy week in Shenandoah made me hate my six-year-old tent so much I finally replaced it.

After three straight nights of waking up in a puddle because the seam tape let go, what really convinced me was watching my buddy's cheap REI tent stay bone dry while mine turned into a swimming pool, has anyone else had a whole trip ruined by bad gear?

Man that seam tape giving up is the worst. I had a similar thing happen with a Kelty tent on a trip to the Smokies, woke up with my sleeping bag literally floating in a little pool of water. My buddy’s old Coleman stayed dry as a bone, so now I call my tent the "personal water feature.

My old Alps Mountaineering tent did the exact same thing on a trip to the Blue Ridge Parkway a few years back. Woke up at 3am with a cold wet spot right under my hip, and by morning my whole sleeping pad was floating. What got me was that I'd bought this cheap little pop-up tent from Walmart for my kid to play with in the backyard, and that thing stayed drier than my expensive one. Your mileage may vary, but I swear sometimes the fancy gear just has more ways to fail than the simple stuff.
