That $8 foam pad from the bin at the Asheville REI outlasted my $120 one
I grabbed a beat up closed cell foam pad from the clearance bin at the REI in Asheville last spring mostly as a joke, since I figured it would be flat as a pancake by the second trip. Turns out I've slept on it 14 nights now on the cold ground near Linville Gorge and it has not lost a bit of loft, while my fancy inflatable started leaking at the valve after 6 trips. I'm not saying foam beats air for everyone, because side sleepers will probably hate it, but my back has been fine and I don't wake up half deflated anymore. Now I'm wondering if I even bother fixing the inflatable or just keep rolling with the cheap pad, so has anyone else gone back to foam after getting burned by a valve?
