Spotted a $12 headlamp at the Estes Park REI that outshone my $60 one

Stopped in the Estes Park REI last weekend before a night hike and watched a guy test a $12 headlamp against a $60 model on the wall, and the cheap one threw a wider beam with no hotspot, so has anyone else swapped a pricey light for a budget one and actually stuck with it?
