Read a comment about washing bags wrong and tested it this weekend
Someone on another thread said most people wash their sleeping bags wrong by using regular detergent, which strips the DWR coating. I always just tossed mine in with tide pods. Tried the tech wash they recommended on my 20 degree bag this Saturday. Water beaded up like new after it dried. What do you all use for cleaning your bags?

Regular detergent really isn't the bag killer people make it out to be. The DWR on most bags wears off from use and dirt long before any soap touches it, so blaming Tide pods is just easy scapegoating. Half the folks pushing tech wash are sponsored or repeating what they read somewhere, and a $15 bottle for something you use twice a year is a hard sell. My old 15 degree bag got washed with whatever was in the laundry room for six years and still kept me warm in the 30s. If water stops beading, you probably need to re-proof it anyway, not switch detergents.
