Rant: I packed my tent wet for years and never knew the damage I was doing

Got home from a rainy trip to the Smokies last month and just threw my soggy tent in the garage like always. My buddy saw it a few days later and said, 'You know that's basically mold city in there, right?' I let it dry out fully for the first time ever and the musty smell was gone. Has anyone else had a tent get ruined from packing it away damp?

What's the big deal with a little moisture? Gear is meant to be used hard. I've done the same thing for a decade and my tent is fine. A bit of a smell doesn't mean it's ruined. People baby their stuff too much. If it still keeps the rain out, it's doing its job.

Pack it wet once and you'll find mold spots in the seams by next season. That smell is mildew eating the waterproof coating. I hang mine in the garage with all the zippers open for a full day, even if it feels dry to the touch.

So your tent doesn't smell at all?
