My grandpa's old canvas tent finally died last spring, and a $6 box of paraffin wax saved my new nylon one
When I got into camping 15 years ago everything was heavy canvas and you just dealt with it, but my new lightweight tent started leaking at the seams after maybe 8 trips. I tried seam sealer from the store three times and it kept peeling off in the cold. My neighbor who has been backpacking since the 70s told me to rub a plain candle or paraffin wax bar along the inside of the seams, then hit it with a hair dryer on low so it soaks in. Did that in my garage in Boise back in October and it has held through 4 wet weekends since. Has anyone else gone back to old school wax tricks instead of the fancy tube stuff?
