My brother-in-law said his $20 Walmart tarp outlasted his fancy $150 one on a rainy weekend in the Smokies.

My old plastic poncho from a gas station has saved me more times than any expensive rain shell. It just lives in the bottom of my pack and never tears. That thing is a total tank.
