Bought a $30 sleeping bag pad off Amazon and froze my back off in the Smokies last weekend

That thing might as well have been a yoga mat for all the warmth it gave me at 40 degrees. Has anyone else gotten burned by those no-name inflatable pads under $50?

40 degrees is cold but its not arctic survival man. That pad probably had like a 1.5 R-value which is basically nothing. People sleep on plywood with a blanket in way worse conditions and survive just fine. Maybe just toss a cheap wool blanket under your bag next time for like $15 and call it good.

You know what @mason847, you kinda changed my mind with this take lmao. I used to be one of those guys who thought you needed some fancy insulated pad for anything under 50 degrees or you'd freeze to death. But honestly you're right, people have been sleeping on way less for centuries and surviving just fine. A cheap wool blanket under your bag probably does way more than people give it credit for, especially at 40 degrees where it's chilly but not deadly. I might actually give that a shot next time instead of dropping cash on another overpriced piece of gear lol.
