Appreciation post: the ranger at Ricketts Glen showed me my tent stakes were worthless
I was setting up camp at Ricketts Glen State Park in Pennsylvania last month when a ranger walked by and pointed at my stakes. He said the skinny ones that came with my tent would pull right out if it rained hard, and he was right because a storm hit that night and two of them popped loose. He came back the next morning with four wide aluminum stakes from his truck and let me keep them. That trip taught me to look at what gear people who camp for a living actually carry. What small gear swap has saved one of your trips?
