Watched a guy relube a Helios 44-2 focus ring in 20 minutes that took me 3 hours back in 2019
I was at a repair meetup in Cleveland last weekend and this older guy named Ray cracked open a stiff Helios 44-2 focus ring in front of me. Back when I started doing this in 2019 I would spend 3 hours fighting those Soviet rings, prying and swearing and usually scratching the barrel. Ray just warmed the whole lens on a heating pad to about 120F for 10 minutes, and the old grease softened enough that the ring came off by hand. Took him maybe 20 minutes total and zero scratches. Is heat the standard move now for these or am I the last guy still muscling them cold?
