Trusted a YouTube repair video and it cost me a shutter blade replacement

Saw a video from a guy in Portland claiming you can fix sticky shutter blades on an old Canon by just cleaning them with lighter fluid. I tried it on a Canon FTb last Tuesday and it made the blades worse, they started sticking together and I had to order a $45 replacement set from a parts shop in Ohio. The guy never mentioned that the fluid leaves a residue that attracts dust. Anyone else have a repair tip from online that backfired this bad?
