Trusted a YouTube repair video and it cost me a shutter blade replacement

Saw a video from a guy in Portland claiming you can fix sticky shutter blades on an old Canon by just cleaning them with lighter fluid. I tried it on a Canon FTb last Tuesday and it made the blades worse, they started sticking together and I had to order a $45 replacement set from a parts shop in Ohio. The guy never mentioned that the fluid leaves a residue that attracts dust. Anyone else have a repair tip from online that backfired this bad?

Lighter fluid on shutter blades?! That guy basically told you to pour glue in your camera. That residue thing is REAL, it gums up the blades and grabs every speck of dust it can find.
