TIL I was cleaning focus rings with the wrong solvent for 4 years
Had a Nikon 50mm f/1.4 come in with a gummy aperture ring and I grabbed the naphtha like always, but a retired guy from the shop down in Fresno asked why I wasn't using plain 99% isopropyl on the rubber grips first. Turns out the naphtha was slowly eating the rubber on every lens I touched since 2019, and I only noticed because this one had visible swelling. Anyone got a go-to order for cleaning rubber vs metal parts?
Why is everyone so quick to blame the naphtha? Four years of lenses and this is the one that swelled up? Sounds more like that particular batch of rubber was junk from the factory, or the lens sat in a hot car for a summer. Naphtha has been the go-to for decades and most rubber grips on old glass handle it fine if you don't soak the thing. The real problem is sloppy technique, wiping too hard and letting solvent pool in the seams, not the product itself.
