Shoutout to the guy who fixed my Polaroid with a hairdryer

Last month in Austin, a retired repair guy at a flea market saw me struggling with a sticky roller on an old OneStep and literally pulled a hairdryer out of his trunk to heat it up. Has anyone else run into random fixes like that that saved you a full teardown?

Wait, you're telling me a hairdryer can actually fix a sticky Polaroid roller and not just melt the thing? I always figured those old-school tricks were just urban legends or something, but that's actually pretty clever how the heat loosens the gunk up without needing to take it apart. This definitely makes me want to try more random household fixes before giving up on old electronics.

Actually, the heat doesn't really loosen up the gunk in the way you're thinking. The sticky roller problem on a Polaroid is usually the rubber surface getting hard and grabbing the film instead of rolling. The hairdryer warms the rubber up so it gets soft and grippy again, which lets it spin properly. It's not about melting any sticky residue or dirt, it's about bringing the rubber back to life temporarily. But here's the catch - it only works for a little while until the rubber cools down and stiffens back up. I've tried it on a couple of Polaroids and it buys you maybe one or two packs of film before you need to heat it again. So it's a quick fix not a real repair, but still cool that a random guy knew that trick.
