Guy at the Columbus camera show told me to quit cleaning mirror boxes with canned air, and I think he's right
I was at the camera show in Columbus last month, just digging through a $5 bin of old filters, when this older repair guy started chatting with me about a Nikon FM2 he had on his table. I mentioned I'd just spent a Saturday blowing dust out of a mirror box with canned air and it kept coming back, and he laughed and said the propellant just pushes grit deeper into the foam seals. He pulled out a little squeeze bulb and a soft brush and showed me how he does it, said he has not touched a can of air on a sensor or mirror in 12 years. I tried it on a customer's dusty Pentax K1000 the next day and the difference was kind of wild, way less stuff stuck near the mirror bumper. Now I'm wondering how much of that canned air residue I've been leaving inside cameras all this time. Has anyone else made the switch, or am I late to something everybody already knew?
