DAE think chasing perfect focus on old lenses is a waste of bench time?
Everyone on here acts like a lens is trash if it front focuses a hair on a test chart, but I've fixed maybe 60 lenses this year and almost nobody shoots wide open at minimum distance. I picked up a beat up Canon FD 50mm f1.4 at a flea market in Mesa for $20, cleaned the helical, and it's sharp as anything at f4 where people actually shoot. I think the obsession with wide open sharpness comes from forum charts, not real photos. Am I wrong here or are we all just chasing numbers?

Oh man, this hits home. I grabbed a beat up Nikon 50mm f1.8 for cheap last year, cleaned it up, and it shoots great at f4 to f8 where I actually use it, so I stopped worrying about how it looks wide open on a chart. Chasing test chart numbers just made me hate lenses I actually enjoy using, so now I just shoot and see if the photos look good.
