An old timer in Fort Worth told me to stop using alcohol swabs on shutter blades, and I ignored him for 2 years
Back when I first started doing shutter work on old film bodies, a retired tech named Ray in Fort Worth told me plain naphtha on a lint-free swab was all I needed and that isopropyl would leave a film behind and attract dust. I did not listen because alcohol was cheaper and dried faster, and for about 2 years I kept wondering why so many of my cleanings came back with slow speeds and sticky second curtains. Then I pulled apart a Pentax spotmatic where the blades had a weird gray haze, and sure enough it traced back to the alcohol. Switched to naphtha on the next 40 or so jobs and the speeds held steady on my tester. Now I keep a small squeeze bottle of it on the bench and only reach for alcohol for external stuff like lens barrels or grip rubber. Has anyone else had shutter blades get cloudy from iso, or did I just get unlucky with the brand I was buying?
