A drop of solder at the Tucson swap meet made me rethink how I fix flex cables
I was at the Tucson camera swap meet two weeks ago and watched a guy fix a broken ribbon cable on a Canon AE-1 with a $9 iron and some tweezers. He laid a tiny bead of solder right on the flex and it held, which goes against everything I was taught about replacing the whole cable. Now I'm torn between doing the quick solder bridge for cheap jobs or sticking with full cable swaps that take me two hours. Half of me says the bridge is a hack that will fail in a month, the other half says the customer just wants the shutter to fire again. Where do you all draw the line on repairs like this?
