TIL tuning an old cable box to channel 3 gave me free HBO for 2 months

Back in '97 I had a busted Zenith cable box that would skip to channel 0 if you touched it wrong. One day I landed on some scrambled signal and realized if I hit the fine-tune knob just right, the picture cleared up on HBO. Did anyone else accidentally stumble onto free channels messing with the tuning wheel?

and that's the thing about old tech, it had all these weird quirks that felt like you were hacking the system. it's kind of like how today you can sometimes stumble onto a free trial that glitches and never ends, or a streaming password that keeps working way past when it should. it makes you wonder how many little loopholes we walk right past every day without noticing. have you ever found any other accidental freebies like that?

The old Nintendo GameCube memory card I found in a drawer from 2003 still has a Final Fantasy save that loads somehow, even after two decades and a system transfer. luna_kim40, that password thing is real - my cousin's old Netflix login from 2016 still works on my Roku and nobody questions it. Makes you wonder what other digital ghosts are floating around (like that free Spotify premium I got from a buggy college promo code eight years ago).
