That $130 VHS rewinder was the best dumb purchase I ever made
Back in 2003 I paid $130 for a motorized VHS rewinder from a RadioShack in Cleveland because my poor old VCR kept eating tapes. Everyone laughed at me for buying a gadget that just did what the VCR already did, but honestly it saved my collection of recorded wrestling PPVs, which I still have. The metal gears never jammed, unlike the plastic junk inside my combo unit, and it paid for itself when I sold some rare tapes for $45 each last year. Who else dropped cash on silly cable-era accessories that actually ended up being worth it, or am I the only one who went this deep?

Man, same here. Bought a Discwasher kit and still use it. Best $40 I ever spent on old tech.

That $130 could have bought you a stack of blank tapes to re-record over if anything got eaten, so the math never adds up for me. @kevinc84's Discwasher at least kept his gear working, but a rewinder is just doing the same job slower than the VCR would. Sounds like you got lucky selling those tapes, but for every one of you there's nine people with a dusty paperweight in a closet.
