Just realized tape trading beat streaming for finding lost shows

Back in 1998 I spent 3 months tracking down a VHS copy of a weird Saturday morning cartoon that only aired once on a local cable access channel. Someone from a forum in Ohio mailed me a tape for $5 plus shipping. The quality was terrible, tracking lines and all, but the hunt felt way more satisfying than scrolling through 12 streaming apps today. Has anyone else had better luck with old school trades than modern archives?

My buddy's dad still has 200 bootleg tapes in his basement labeled by region.

The librarian at my local branch told me people still trade bootlegs of old broadcasts because the digital archives miss a lot of local stuff. She said collectors know the gaps better than any database. That matches my experience, the hunt was half the fun.
