A guy in a Usenet group taught me to stop taping over my old VHS tapes, and it saved my whole collection
Back around 2001 I was taping over my old Nick at Nite recordings to save shelf space until a guy in a Usenet group called rec.video told me to knock it off, and he was blunt about it. He said old tapes lose about 10 to 20 percent of their picture each time you record over them, so a third taping looks like snow. I switched to buying blank tapes in 5 packs and kept every original, and now my 1994 tape of Nick at Nite still plays clean on my old VCR. I'd been taping over stuff for years without thinking about it. What did you all do to keep your old recordings alive, or did some of you just let the tapes rot in a garage?
