A guy at the laundromat called MTV's 120 Minutes "the Sunday night homework channel" and I can't shake it
I was folding towels in Astoria last Tuesday when some guy in a Queens College hoodie saw my old 120 Minutes shirt and started laughing. He said back in 1993 he'd leave it on while writing papers because the videos were weird enough to keep him awake but the volume never pulled him away from his book. I got home and pulled up a 1994 episode on YouTube and he's right, they aired stuff like Slowdive and Catherine Wheel at midnight like it was nothing. So what was your version of that, a cable show you kept on for background noise that somehow ended up meaning way more to you than the stuff you actually sat down to watch?
Late night MTV in general was this for me, especially Amp and Oddville in the late 90s. Something about that weird fuzzy cable glow at 1am made even the boring stuff feel important, and now those blocks are gone while the shows I actually planned to watch I barely remember. It's funny how the background noise ends up being the stuff you miss most.
