Unpopular opinion: I was wrong about always using a 6-inch bit in attics

A retired installer in Spokane told me last week, 'A 12-inch bit is slower, but you only drill once.' It made me realize I've been creating more work for myself. Anyone have a favorite long bit brand that doesn't bind up?

Dakotacraig gets it, but you can still double drill with a long bit.

That "only drill once" logic is solid.

Funny thing about that retired installer's advice. Something nobody's mentioned yet is how long bits actually teach you better body positioning. When you're up on a ladder with a 12-inch bit you can't just lean in wrong or you'll snap the bit or punch through drywall below. It forces you to get centered and square to the joist before you even start. I learned that the hard way after replacing a section of ceiling tape and mud because I got cocky with a 6-inch bit and drilled right through the living room ceiling. The longer bit slows you down mentally too, makes you think about what's underneath before you commit.
