Showerthought: I used to think fishing wires through finished walls was always a huge pain.

Last month in a 1920s house in Portland, I tried using a flexible drill bit extension for the first time. It got through the old plaster and lathe without making a huge mess. What's your go-to tool for tricky old construction?

Old houses are full of these little surprises. It's satisfying when a simple tool finally solves a problem people have been struggling with for decades.

My grandpa's 1920s bungalow had a door that never latched right. Turns out the whole frame had settled almost an inch. A $15 bottle jack from the auto parts store and some patience fixed what three previous owners called a lost cause.

Saw a video where someone used a car jack to lift a sagging porch. Same idea, just getting things back to where they should be. Always cool when the fix is that simple.
